Description

Hot Cross Buns are sweet, spiced buns traditionally eaten during the Easter season, marked with a cross on top.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup mixed dried fruit (currants, raisins, etc.)
  • 1/4 cup candied orange peel
  • 1/4 cup icing sugar (for glaze)
  • Water (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. In a saucepan, heat milk, water, and butter until warm. Add to the dry ingredients.
  3. Add eggs and mix until a dough forms. Knead for about 10 minutes.
  4. Incorporate dried fruit and candied orange peel into the dough.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape into buns.
  7. Place buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Make a cross on each bun with a knife or a paste of flour and water.
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Mix icing sugar with water to create a glaze and brush over the warm buns.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  • These buns can be served warm or toasted with butter.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
