Description
Hot Cross Buns are sweet, spiced buns traditionally eaten during the Easter season, marked with a cross on top.
Ingredients

- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup mixed dried fruit (currants, raisins, etc.)
- 1/4 cup candied orange peel
- 1/4 cup icing sugar (for glaze)
- Water (for glaze)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In a saucepan, heat milk, water, and butter until warm. Add to the dry ingredients.
- Add eggs and mix until a dough forms. Knead for about 10 minutes.
- Incorporate dried fruit and candied orange peel into the dough.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape into buns.
- Place buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Make a cross on each bun with a knife or a paste of flour and water.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- Mix icing sugar with water to create a glaze and brush over the warm buns.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can add a teaspoon of vanilla extract.
- These buns can be served warm or toasted with butter.
- Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
